FAQ & limits
Where is my recording stored? Is anything uploaded?
Entirely in your browser's memory until you click Download clip — that
is the first and only time the video touches disk. If you serve this page from a local server, it only
delivers the page itself; no video bytes ever leave your machine. Browser storage (localStorage) holds
just your settings and script text — never video. One exception: the teleprompter's
Follow my speech mode uses the browser vendor's cloud speech service (Chrome/Edge need internet
for it) — pick Timed scroll for fully offline operation.
How long can a recording be?
Webcam Studio is built for short clips — under ~10 minutes. A
10-minute take at High quality is only ~1 GB, which any modern browser handles comfortably, and the
record → review → download loop stays instant.
- Longer takes do work in Chrome / Edge (the browser pages data to disk as it grows): budget ~3.6 GB/hour at Standard, ~6.3 GB/hour at High, ~10.8 GB/hour at Ultra (1080p).
- Safari / Firefox hold the whole take in RAM — stay near the 10-minute target there.
Why keep the tab visible while recording with a watermark or overlay?
Watermark and picture-in-picture frames are painted through a canvas, which browsers
throttle in background tabs — audio keeps recording but video frames drop. With no watermark and no
overlay, recording goes straight from the camera and is unaffected.
